What word or words have you thought were spelled one way but later discovered were spelled and/or pronounced another way? How did you react?

I used to think David Neiwart's blog Orcinus was Ornicus. Even though I saw the picture of the orca whale, it took me months to correct my initial mistake.

I thought Giuliani was "Guiliani" until a websearch corrected me. Weeks after my initial misreading, I caught on.

I mistakenly spelled Schiavo (as in Terri) as "Schaivo." An eagle-eyed commenter pointed out my mistake.

There are many others that don't come to mind right now. Phooey.

Eh, I mean Neiwert.

Hmmm, let's see...words that suck eggs....
Definitely
Convenient
Curious
Curiosity (took a long time to notice)
The
Sentences containing words with the same value (multiple nouns and objects easily interchange.)
In Spanish...(isn't as hard as English because Spanish has "pure" sounds.)
almuerzo (lunch)
nueve (nine)
Just thought I'd add to the list here. :)

I still internally pronounce definitely as "deaf-finite-lee," in order to spell it correctly.

Curiously, I've never had any problem with curiosity because it's spelled the way I pronounce it.

That and early exposure to Curious George and Alice in Wonderland (curiouser and curiouser).

Of course "curiouser" doesn't look right somehow. Oh well.

The Church Lady ensured that I don't have a problem with "convenient." Because she pronounced all the vowels. "How con-veen-ee-ent!"

Because English has so many exceptions to the rules it's hard for me to go on pronounciations. I was never a fan of Alice in Wonderland, but monkeys are awesome. But, I'm def-en-it-lee with you there.

*"sucks eggs" is a random phrase made common by some friends and myself. Other of my phrases are "okiedah" "yepyep" "okieday" "snot" (I know--not my word, but my purpose) and other random tags here and there...
